LAUTECH board unveils high-tech overhaul plan for Oyo hospital

The newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Board, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Prof. Banji Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, has unveiled a strategy aimed at transforming the institution into a digital, technology-driven regional medical powerhouse — one that will place the state at the forefront of healthcare innovation in Nigeria.

In a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Tuesday, Oyelaran-Oyeyinka, speaking at the inauguration of the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Governing Board, said the hospital was entering a new era anchored on “Reimagining, Rebuilding and Repositioning”.

He said, “I am confident that by mid- to third quarter of 2026, Your Excellency, all support timely received will be in Ogbomoso to open a new LAUTECH TH that answers to our aspired strategic vision that will truly be your enduring legacy: a teaching hospital that is a regional leader, technology-driven, sustainable, a centre of medical excellence, research, and training, with strong global partnerships and sustainable infrastructure.”

Oyelaran-Oyeyinka is a development economist, visiting professor at The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK, and a former Senior Special Adviser on Industrialisation to the President of the African Development Bank.

He thanked Governor Seyi Makinde for what he described as “a weighty responsibility” and pledged to lead a board defined by integrity, accountability, and excellence.

“I stand before you today to formally and gratefully accept the appointment as Chairman of the Governing Board of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso. We are here not merely to oversee, but to catalyse transformative change,” he said.

Oyelaran-Oyeyinka revealed that his early assessments of the hospital, through briefings and an extensive site visit, reinforced the need to fully elevate LAUTECH TH into a modern tertiary and quaternary referral centre equipped to manage the most complex medical cases.

Central to this transformation is the Electronic Medical Record system, which he described as “especially urgent to transform the hospital into a modern, 21st-century Century high-tech-driven institution.”

The EMR’s goals include digitising 80–100 per cent of patient encounters, reducing outpatient waiting time by 25–50 per cent, achieving 95–98 per cent billing accuracy, strengthening decision-making with AI-powered alerts, risk scores, and predictive analytics, and providing real-time dashboards for leadership.

Others are securing at least 85 per cent staff adoption, supporting hybrid power and resilient IT systems.

According to him, this digital overhaul will not only improve efficiency but “position Oyo State as a national leader in digital healthcare innovation.”

He added that such a transformation would “strengthen public trust”, reduce leakages, attract health grants, and align with the state’s broader smart-government agenda.

Oyelaran-Oyeyinka outlined a series of short-term projects the board will pursue within 18 months under “Rebuilding, Restoring and Repositioning”.

These include a facility facelift – repainting, asphalt repairs, and urgent safety improvements; full staffing of the newly accredited College of Nursing Sciences; finalising PPP and operationalising CT scan services; equipping the ICU with ventilators, monitors, and analysers; replacing eight moribund dialysis machines; procuring key diagnostic equipment; implementing structured staff development programmes; and constructing staff hostels.

He emphasised that institutional morale and staff welfare would remain central, reminding the governor of the September 2025 subvention promise of N35 million and salary support for 65 ad hoc staff.

“I pray for Your Excellency to make the arrears issue a priority and a Christmas gift. Strikes and staff discontent have marred the great mission of this institution,” he said.

The board chairman described the transformation of the teaching hospital as part of a broader fight against what he termed the “three villains of development”: poverty, hunger, and disease.

“To defeat one villain, one must fight all three simultaneously. Revamping LAUTECH TH would significantly strengthen the state’s ability to safeguard public health and economic productivity,” he said.

Makinde, in his remarks, charged the board to deliver results with speed and precision.

He said, “Today, we are inaugurating the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital. The LAUTECH Teaching Hospital must be totally revamped and operational within 12 months.”

Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to modernising healthcare infrastructure across the state and ensuring that LAUTECH becomes a flagship teaching hospital in Nigeria.
