The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has unveiled new enforcement measures to prevent security personnel from extorting members of the public or compromising security in the state.
Orutugu disclosed this on Tuesday in Awka following security assessments indicating that unauthorised persons have been using police and other security agency uniforms to commit crimes.
“The Anambra Police Command has introduced new enforcement measures to strengthen public security and curb the misuse of security uniforms.
“These directives aim to ensure proper identification of all security personnel on duty and to eliminate the activities of impersonators who endanger public safety.
“Anyone found wearing, selling, or using police or other security agency uniforms, kits, or accessories without authorisation will face immediate arrest and prosecution,” Orutugu said.
He stressed that security uniforms are classified government property and that unlawful possession constitutes a criminal offence.
According to him, impersonators often use such uniforms to commit crimes, intimidate residents, and evade law enforcement scrutiny.
The police commissioner also directed divisional police officers, tactical teams and patrol units across the state to intensify visibility policing and verify personnel identities during operations.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals impersonating security personnel.
Residents can report such cases through the Anambra Police Control Room on 07039194332 or the Police Public Relations Officer on 08039334002.
