Justice Sector Reforms Crucial for Economic Growth – Fagbemi, Sule
The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has emphasized the importance of justice sector reforms in attracting investment and fostering economic growth.
Fagbemi made the remark while declaring open the Conference of the Network of Justice Sector Reform Teams on Friday in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The conference, themed “Interoperability between Access to Justice and the Ease of Doing Business,” brought together stakeholders in the justice sector to discuss ways of improving the administration of justice and promoting economic development.
Fagbemi noted that a robust, predictable, and efficient justice system is critical to attracting investment and creating jobs.
“I wish to emphasize that there can be no meaningful economic progress without a robust, predictable, and efficient justice system. The “Ease of Doing Business” is not merely a matter of enhancing bureaucratic efficiency; it is fundamentally a critical factor in service delivery and justice administration.”
“It includes institutional assurances which we give to a small business owner in Lafia, a tech entrepreneur in Lagos, and an international investor in London, that their rights will be protected, their contracts will be enforced, and their disputes will be resolved fairly and expeditiously.”
He emphasized the need for collaboration and cooperation between the federal and state governments to drive justice sector reforms.
The Attorney General also highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to improve the efficiency of the justice system, promoting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, and reducing the complexity of court procedures.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, noted his administration’s commitment to supporting justice reforms.
He emphasized the need for a fair, impartial, and efficient justice system to attract investment and promote economic growth.
“We are aggressively seeking private sector investment to harness our vast mineral and agricultural potential, create jobs, and build sustainable infrastructure.”
“However, we know that investors are not just looking for resources; they are looking for certainty. They are looking for a jurisdiction where the rule of law is not a mere slogan, but a lived reality. They want to know that commercial agreements will be respected, that regulatory frameworks are stable, and that in the event of a dispute, they will have access to a fair, impartial, and efficient Justice System.”
Sule also highlighted the importance of technology in improving service delivery and promoting ADR mechanisms.
He charged the participants to forge concrete, actionable strategies to drive justice sector reforms and promote economic development.
The conference aimed to develop practical solutions to improve the administration of justice and promote economic growth in Nigeria.
