AFCON: Salah seals Egypt progress to Round of 16
Mohamed Salah scored the clincher for Egypt in their 3-1 win over Benin in extra-time to progress into the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON 2025 quarter final stage.
The Pharaohs were forced into extra-time in their round of 16 encounter by Jodel Dossou who cancelled Marwan Ateya’s earlier strike, before Yasser Ibrahim and Salah silenced Benin in the extra 30 minutes at the Stade Adrar stadium in Morocco.
Egypt were frustrated by the defensive shape of Benin, and had to wait until the 69th minute for Ateya’s volley into the top corner from outside the area to take the lead. Benin improved after conceding, and capitalized on poor kick from Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy to fashion out the equalizer, Dossou slammed a rebound into the net from two yards to force extra-time.
Gernot Rohr’s wards would have looked forward to penalty shootout but Egypt did not settle for the draw, as further goals by Ibrahim in the 97th minute, and Salah sealed Egypt’s well-deserved win in the final minute of extra-time to send Benin packing from Morocco.
Egypt will play in their first AFCON quarter-final since 2010, and their 19th in AFCON history.
The Pharaohs await winner of the tie between Nigeria and Mozambique in the final-eight stage.
