Anthony Joshua: Ogun, Lagos governments open joint investigation into accident
The Ogun and Lagos State governments have launched a joint investigation into a fatal road traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway involving British-Nigerian boxing champion Anthony Joshua, amid renewed scrutiny of safety conditions along one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
In a statement released on Monday, the two governments confirmed that the vehicle conveying Joshua and three others collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of two occupants. Officials said inquiries had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the presence and positioning of the truck on the expressway.
Joshua and another passenger were evacuated to a specialist medical facility in Lagos, where doctors carried out comprehensive assessments. Authorities said both were stable and did not require emergency medical intervention, adding that a full medical team had been assigned to monitor their condition.
The statement noted that Joshua was conscious and had been in contact with his family.

Beyond the condition of those involved, the governments’ response places renewed focus on the long-standing dangers associated with the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a critical transport corridor that has been the site of repeated fatal accidents, often linked to broken-down heavy-duty vehicles, poor visibility and traffic management lapses.
Officials said they were coordinating medical support for the survivors and engaging relevant agencies as investigations proceed.
The governments also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of Joshua and his family, while expressing condolences to the families of the two people who died in the crash.
The outcome of the investigation, they said, would guide any further action.
