Zamfara Govt to Rehabilitate ABU VC’s Lodge, Sickbay
The Zamfara State Government has offered to rehabilitate the dilapidated Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge and the University Sickbay at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in line with Governor Dauda Lawal’s commitment to supporting critical infrastructure in tertiary institutions.
The offer was disclosed by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Domestic Affairs, Shamsuddeen Ibrahim, during an inspection visit to the facilities, according to a statement issued by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, ABU, Zaria.
During the visit, Ibrahim was conducted round the Vice-Chancellor’s Lodge at Site I, Area ‘A’, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria, by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, alongside the Director, Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Arc. Mukhtar H. Mohammed, and the Provost, Postgraduate College, Prof. Olayinka Okubanjo.
The delegation later inspected the University Sickbay, where they were received by the Deputy Director, University Health Services, Dr Alex Otu, who took them round the various sections of the facility. These include the administrative block, theatre room, outpatient department, antenatal and family planning units, emergency room, ultrasound room and dental section.
Dr Otu expressed delight over the planned intervention, noting that the medical facility required urgent attention due to its current state. He said the sickbay continued to attract a high number of patients, including non-university users, because of the quality of services rendered, adding that the dental unit was among the busiest sections, necessitating collaboration with the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH).
He further disclosed that the NHIS unit was inadequate for the volume of clients, describing the ABU sickbay as having one of the highest numbers of enrollees in the country.
Speaking after the inspection, Ibrahim expressed concern over the level of dilapidation of the facilities and assured that a technical team would be deployed to the sites early January 2026 for further assessment and eventual take-over ahead of rehabilitation works.
The development followed Governor Lawal’s earlier pledge to intervene in the rehabilitation of some infrastructure in the institution, a move the university described as a response to a recent appeal by its management during a visit to Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
