Insecurity: Our troops are brave, but political will is lacking – Kwankwaso
The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has attributed Nigeria’s worsening insecurity to a lack of political will rather than deficiencies within the armed forces.
Kwankwaso spoke on Tuesday in Kano during the inauguration of the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, where 2,000 trained operatives were unveiled to support community-based security.
“Our military officers and men are courageous and well-trained. What is lacking today is political will, especially from the Commander-in-Chief,” he said.
Drawing from his experience as a Minister of Defence, Kwankwaso noted that Nigerian troops had consistently demonstrated professionalism and bravery in international peacekeeping missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Darfur and other conflict zones across Africa.
He stressed that the federal government must live up to its constitutional responsibility by adequately equipping and supporting the military and other security agencies.
“The Commander-in-Chief must truly act as such by providing the necessary equipment, arms, training and retraining needed to defeat criminal elements,” he added.
Kwankwaso commended the Kano State Government for establishing the Neighbourhood Watch Corps, describing it as a timely response to emerging security challenges, particularly along Kano’s borders with neighbouring states.
