Niger Delta group awards 650 MSME grants

The Niger Delta Young Professionals has awarded 650 grants, created 20,000 jobs, and provided free mentorship programmes to help businesses scale through its annual Niger Delta Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises  Summit.

The fifth edition of the summit, held on Tuesday in Yenagoa, brought together young innovators, policymakers, and business leaders from across the region.

The event carried the theme: “Enhancing the Role of MSMEs as a Driver of Sustainable Growth and Innovation.”

Speaking at the summit, the Convener of NDYP, Mr. Moses Siasia, highlighted the group’s commitment to empowering young entrepreneurs.

He said: “We have given over 650 grants to support businesses, creating over 20,000 jobs. What we are doing is historic. We are building men and women that will stand the test of time.

“As young entrepreneurs, we are change makers in the society. The future and destiny of this region lies in our hands. We must continue to work to bring the needed change.”

He urged young business owners to fully utilise the insights and knowledge gained from the summit to transform their enterprises.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, affirmed the government’s commitment to initiatives that empower young people in the state. He said:

“Resources of the earth are diminishing. It is only those who act smart that will survive. If things are not working, you must find a way to do it better. You must be very intentional so that you can succeed. At every level you find yourself, there are higher levels to explore.”

The governor also commended the NDYP for consistently nurturing young entrepreneurs and urged participants to apply the knowledge acquired from the summit.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. George Omoraro, founder and CEO of Rage Media, encouraged participants to invest in self-education, uphold the right principles, and take positive actions to shape their future. He said:

“Our environment is not a limitation. People who go through more adversity find themselves in better advantaged situations: it is you and your reactions that matter most, not the environment.”

Omoraro urged young entrepreneurs to view challenges as opportunities to grow and succeed.

In his welcome address, the Coordinator of the summit, Mr. Gerald Sogorge, acknowledged the dedication of partners, speakers, and participants in driving progress in the region’s MSME sector.
