Kano Ulama reject alleged US call to scrap shariah, Hisbah
A coalition of ulama and Islamic organisations in Kano State has condemned what it described as unwarranted interference by the United States in Nigeria’s internal affairs, following reports that the US Congress urged the federal government to abolish Sharia laws and the Hisbah institution.
Operating under the banner of the Coalition of Ulama and Islamic Organisations in Kano State, the group said the alleged move was provocative, undemocratic, and an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty, warning that it could undermine peaceful coexistence among citizens.
In a statement signed by Dr Saidu Ahmad Dukawa, the coalition maintained that Shariah and Hisbah are constitutionally backed and represent the religious rights of Muslims, insisting that such rights cannot be surrendered under external pressure.
“We strongly maintain that Muslims in Kano, and indeed in Nigeria, will not forego their constitutional and God-given rights to practise Shariah among the Muslim population,” the statement said.
The group also defended the Hisbah Corps, describing it as a critical institution that promotes peace and protects lives and property.
It noted that Hisbah has provided security for mosques, churches and worshippers during periods of tension, contributing to stability rather than division.
According to the coalition, Kano’s experience shows that Hisbah supports peaceful coexistence, contrary to claims portraying it as a source of conflict.
The ulama called on the US government to respect Nigeria’s sovereignty and allow elected leaders to manage domestic affairs without interference.
They also urged the federal and state governments not to succumb to intimidation from foreign powers, but to remain accountable to the Nigerian people.
While acknowledging the country’s security challenges, the coalition said violence affects all religious groups, adding that Muslims are among the worst hit in many conflict areas.
The group called for more effective measures to address insecurity nationwide and pledged support for initiatives aimed at lasting peace.
“We reaffirm our faith in the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No foreign power should dictate to our government,” the statement added.
