Redknapp predicts January exit for Mohamed Salah

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Mohamed Salah could leave Anfield during the January transfer window, following his continued exclusion from the starting lineup.

Salah was benched for the start of Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Sunderland at Anfield. The 33-year-old Egyptian forward was brought on in the second half but made little impact as Liverpool failed to secure all three points.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp warned that the situation could soon reach a breaking point.

“He’s a Premier League great, a Liverpool great, and that’s why I don’t think this is going to end well,” Redknapp said.

“He’s not going to want to be on the bench. He hasn’t signed this contract to see his career out; he wants to play week in, week out.”

Redknapp added that he would be “amazed” if Salah completed the remaining 18 months of his contract, suggesting a departure in January or next summer is increasingly plausible.

He further noted that Salah will have a major influence on the decision:

“If he says, ‘If I’m not going to be a starter, I won’t hang around,’ then he’ll go. He’s earned that right. I still think he’ll want to play in Europe.”

While acknowledging speculation linking Salah to the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer, Redknapp described the current situation as a “breaking point” in the relationship between the player and the club.

Salah has scored only four goals during Liverpool’s underwhelming start to the Premier League season and has played just 45 minutes across their last two matches.

The Saudi Pro League remains strongly interested in signing the Egyptian forward, who penned a new two-year contract in April.
