Lookman downplays Osimhen feud as Chelle hints at punishment
Ademola Lookman has stated he is more interested in the team’s outcome over individual events on the field following his on-field feud with Victor Osimhen as Nigeria crushed Mozambique 4-0.
The winger stated this in his post-match interview about the incident that overshadowed Nigeria’s emphatic round of 16 victory at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations AFCON 2025 in Morocco.
Osimhen had clashed in the second half of the encounter as Nigeria led by three goals.
The Galatasaray striker fumed as Lookman failed to pass the ball in the 63rd minute, prompting a fit of rage from the former Napoli striker.
Osimhen was caught on camera saying “no try am again” as he demanded his teammate pass the ball in subsequent plays.
Lookman, who scored once, provided two assists, and was named man of the match, however downplayed the confrontation.
The Atalanta winger said in his post-match comments that the incident is a regular occurrence in football, adding that the player and team remain hungry as they push on to the next game towards AFCON success.
“Victor is our number one guy. He’s a top striker, vital to us” Lookman stated.
“Moments like that happen, but they don’t change our togetherness. I play for the badge and my teammates; assists or goals, the team comes first. Victor’s hunger drives us; we understand each other and keep pushing. We stay calm, respect decisions, and focus on the next game.”
However, 26-year-old Osimhen requested to be substituted by coach Eric Chelle, and the Franco-Malian tactician has hinted at internal disciplinary measures could be taken against the striker. However, he did not disclose the type of punishment.
“What happened on the pitch will stay in the group. I don’t need to tell you what will happen, I keep that to me.”
