Sixty adolescent students drawn from five secondary schools in Ilesa, Osun State, have completed training on comprehensive sexuality education.
The training was organised by Action Health Incorporated with support from the United Nations Population Fund and in collaboration with the Osun State Ministry of Education.
The organisers said the training was designed to build the knowledge and capacity of the participants to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and raise awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Osun State.
Speaking with The PUNCH at the venue in Ilesa on Thursday, the Coordinator of the training, Mrs. Toyin Adelowokan, said the participants were taught about gender issues, sexually transmitted infections, FGM, and how to protect themselves against violence targeting girls.
“The participants are adolescent girls. Sixty in number, they were selected from five schools in Ilesa. They were brought together and given comprehensive training in sexuality education.
“They are all adolescents, and during the training, they were taught about gender issues, sexually transmitted infections, female genital mutilation, and other important information on how to protect themselves against violence targeting the girl child,” Adelowokan said.
In her admonition to parents, she urged them to “take proper care of their girl child. A lot is happening in society presently. We should be very close to our girls so that if they face any challenges, they can open up.
“If parents are close to them and they are facing challenges, they will speak up. But when parents are not close, they won’t open up and may receive information that could harm them.”
A public health expert and the lead trainer, Damilola Arowolo, highlighted the importance of the initiative.
“It is important that the girls are empowered with the right knowledge. We are also fortifying them to help us end female genital mutilation in this generation,” Arowolo said.
