NASFAT warns against misinterpreting Quran to violate women’s rights
The Nasrul-Lahi-li Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT) has warned against the misuse of Quranic verses and prophetic traditions to justify the abuse or mistreatment of women and girls.
The statement was made in observance of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
NASFAT said Islam upholds justice, compassion, and the protection of every human being, and that harmful cultural practices should not be confused with religious teachings.
The organisation, in a statement by the Chief Missioner, Imam Abdul-Azeez Onike, pointed to several common misconceptions, such as the false claim that Hawwā’ (Eve) alone was responsible for Adam’s fall, the fabrication of rewards like “72 virgins” for killing non-Muslims, and the misapplication of Quranic verses on polygyny and marital conflicts to justify oppression.
The society reiterated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) consistently honoured women, treated them with kindness, and denounced all forms of injustice.
NASFAT stressed that abuse stems from cultural misinterpretations, ignorance, and extremism, which are never from Islam.
It urged immediate action from all relevant stakeholders, asking religious organisations to promote accurate Islamic teachings about women’s rights.
Onike said Muslim preachers must avoid spreading unverified narrations and cultural myths while Islamic scholars should offer clear, contextual explanations of sensitive religious texts.
He said mosques and Islamic centres should include education on gender-based violence (GBV) in sermons and community programmes, while families are encouraged to reject harmful norms and raise both boys and girls with equal respect.
