Michael Carrick emerges favourite for Man United caretaker coach
Former England midfielder Michael Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate to be appointed Manchester United’s caretaker head coach, according to sources close to the process.
According to BBC Sports, Man United officials are keen to have an appointment in place before players return to training on Wednesday.
While a final decision has yet to be made, discussions with the 44-year-old are understood to be at an advanced stage.

Carrick previously served as United’s interim manager in 2021 following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjær. During that three-game spell, he recorded two wins and a draw before stepping aside after the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim boss.
Solskjær also held face-to-face talks with the club on Saturday regarding a possible return.
Man United parted ways with Ruben Amorim on January 5 after 14 months in charge. In the immediate aftermath, former United and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher was handed temporary responsibility for the first team.
Fletcher oversaw a Premier League draw at Burnley last Wednesday before Sunday’s FA Cup third-round defeat to Brighton, a match widely expected to be his final game in charge.
Carrick enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Old Trafford, making 464 appearances between 2006 and 2018 after joining from Tottenham under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson.
