5 abducted Rivers’ varsity students rescued
Five students of the Rivers State University (RSU) abducted by gunmen suspected to be cultists have been rescued by operatives of the state police command with the assistance of other security agencies and the community.
Police Spokesperson in Rivers State, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the rescue in a statement, said the abducted students were rescued at the wee hours on Thursday and are currently at a hospital for medical examination.
Daily Trust recalled that gunmen suspected to be cultists stormed the institution’s off-campus residence at Rumuchi/Rumuohia in Emuoha Local Government Area in the early hours on Tuesday and whisked the abducted students to an unknown destination.
Other students who escaped the attack were said to have sustained injuries.
It was gathered that both the institution’s campuses at Nkpolu-Oroworukwu in Port Harcourt and Emuoha are currently experiencing security challenges, as hoodlums have attacked students recently.
SP Iringe-Koko said the rescued victims have been taken to the hospital for medical examination and that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing cultists/abductors.
