2027: After Obi, Atiku woos others to join ADC
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as a positive development for Nigeria’s opposition politics.
Atiku said Obi’s entry into the ADC would strengthen collaboration among opposition figures and help build a credible alternative capable of forming government.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, on Wednesday defected from the Labour Party to the ADC.
Speaking at the declaration ceremony in Enugu State, he pledged to resist electoral malpractice and urged opposition leaders to unite in order to address national challenges, including disunity, poverty and undemocratic practices.

Reacting in a statement shared on his social media platforms, Atiku described Obi’s defection as a landmark moment for opposition coalition-building in Nigeria.
“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” Atiku said.
He expressed optimism that the move would energise opposition efforts and deepen cooperation ahead of future elections.
“It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition—one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people,” he added.
Atiku further called on other opposition figures to follow Obi’s example and join the ADC-led coalition.
“As the ADC coalition train leaves Enugu, the capital of the South-East, I hope this inspires other patriots to join the cause, with the train headed in their direction,” he said.
