Nigeria to face Mozambique in AFCON Round of 16
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Mambas of Mozambique in the round of 16 stage of the Africa Cup of Nations AFCON 2025 ongoing in Morocco.
This was confirmed following the completion of group stage matches on Wednesday night, with Cameroon coming from a goal down to defeat Mozambique 2-1 and finish second in Group F.
Defending champions Ivory Coast scored a last-minute winner to take top spot in the group, coming from two goals deficit to defeat basement nation Gabon 3-2, with Mozambique progressing as one of four best third-placed nations. Sudan, Tanzania, and Benin complete the quartet.
The Super Eagles, with a flawless group stage performance in which they scored the highest number of goals (8 goals), will be favourites against Mozambique in the match set for the Fes stadium on Monday, January 5.
In other pairings, hosts Morocco will continue their quest for the AFCON trophy against Tanzania, while Egypt and Benin square off. Senegal will also be expected to advance against a tricky Sudan.
Tough matchups expected in the round include Congo DR facing Algeria, the clash between Cameroon and South Africa, and Ivory Coast against Burkina Faso.
Algeria and Congo DR go into the match with unbeaten group stage record, while it is a West Africa derby between Ivory Coast and plucky Burkina Faso. Mali, still without a win in the tournament, will face Tunisia for a chance to continue their AFCON journey in Morocco.
Round of 16 matches will begin on Saturday, January 3.
