Nigeria win vs Algeria: Onyemaechi, Osayi-Samuel among unsung heroes
The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 in their AFCON ’25 quarter-final match in Marrakesh on Saturday.
Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams’ goals sealed the victory.
The pitch was littered with superlative performance, with the popular players Osimhen, Adams, and Alex Iwobi grabbing the headlines. The supporting cast provided the platform for the big names to flourish, and we celebrate four of these unsung heroes who stood out in the high-tempo encounter.
Calvin Bassey:
The central defender’s contribution to the team is usually understated, perhaps due to his massive physical appearance. Aside his strength and pace, he has also displayed a knack for snuffing out opposition attacks. He won the ball that led to Adams’ goal, could have registered his name on the scoresheet but for Bansebaini’s goal-line clearance, and won attack-ending free kicks in favour of Nigeria. He was colossal, and denied the Fennecs a sniff of goal.
Bruno Onyemaechi:
Berated by Osimhen against Mozambique, responded with an improved performance against Algeria. He silenced Algeria’s dangerman Riyad Mahrez, made four recoveries, won 100% aerial duels, and was a positive outlet in attack with five key passes. His accurate deep crosses put Algeria on the back foot, and ironically, Osimhen was a beneficiary for the opener. Lesson learnt, and a superlative performance delivered.
Bright Osayi-Samuel:
Manned the opposite flank in the full-back position, and was also superb in both attack and defence. Osayi-Samuel was fouled a match-high five times, had two successful dribbles and over 90% pass accuracy. He put his body on the line in the second half as Algeria probed from his side, and won all duels he faced late in the half.
Frank Onyeka:
The combative, box-to-box midfielder was at his usual industry against an Algeria midfield that paraded tricky youngster Ibrahim Maza who was silenced by Onyeka. The Brentford man attempted the highest number of tackles and won several second balls to prevent Algeria from having a foothold in midfield or attack, providing the platform for Iwobi to excel in conjunction with captain Wilfred Ndidi.
