White House shut down as gunman shoots soldiers
White House, America’s seat of Power, has been locked down alongside multiple government buildings, as a result of a shooting incident near the presidential residence.
Two member of the National Guard were shot in the incident.
Governor Patrick Morrisey had first said the troops were killed but he later said he was receiving “conflicting reports” about the conditions of the two service members, adding that further information would be released once it is confirmed.
“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” he said in a post on X.
“Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.”
According to reports, President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago resort home in Palm Beach, Florida, at the the time of the incident.
“The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, said in a statement.
DC’s Metropolitan Police said a suspect in the shooting was in custody.
National guard troops have been in Washington DC for months as part of Trump’s anti-crime crackdown in the nation’s capital.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said, “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price.”
