Super Falcons hopeful Edna Imade dumps Nigeria for Spain

Super Falcons prospect Edna Imade has officially switched her international allegiance to Spain after turning down multiple approaches to represent Nigeria.

Imade, 25, who plays as a forward for Liga F side Real Sociedad on loan from Bayern Munich, was born in Morocco to Nigerian parents but has now committed her future to the Spanish national team.

The forward made her competitive debut for Spain in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final on Friday, ending long-running speculation over a potential switch to Nigeria.

Spain head coach Sonia Bermúdez handed Imade her maiden call-up for the two-legged final against Germany. She came on for Esther González in the 85th minute, a moment that permanently tied her to Spain, as the Nations League is an official FIFA-recognised competition.

In October, Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu expressed confidence that Imade might still choose Nigeria; however, the Spanish Football Federation acted quickly to secure her commitment.

“I’ve been following her progress, just like that of many of our players overseas,” Madugu told ESPN.

“She had an excellent campaign with Granada last season, scoring nine goals in 11 starts, and is already doing well on loan at Real Sociedad.

“Despite several efforts, including writing to her club and reaching out through some of our players in Spain last season, she had yet to make up her mind fully. Whatever she decides, we respect her decision and wish her good luck.”

The Nigerian-born becomes the second eligible forward in recent years to switch nationality to Spain, following Barcelona starlet Vicky López.
