Zamfara Gov’t to Review Pay of 11,300 Imams, Islamic Clerics

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has announced plans to upgrade the salary scale of 11,300 Juma’at Imams and Islamic clerics across the state, with the new structure expected to take effect from January 2026.

The governor made the disclosure while addressing religious leaders, reiterating his administration’s commitment to improving their welfare and working conditions.

He revealed that the state government currently spends N81.8 million monthly on the payment of stipends to Islamic clerics, Juma’at Imams and mosque cleaners.

According to him, the planned review followed recommendations of the committee on the Integrated E-Payment System. “The committee report recommended that your salaries should be upgraded, and I assure you that from January 2026, this will be implemented for your comfort,” Lawal said.

The governor also briefed the clerics on some interventions attracted by his administration, including a $3 million support secured from the European Union, alongside other initiatives aimed at improving governance and welfare in the state.

Expressing concern over the lingering security challenges in Zamfara, Lawal urged the religious leaders to intensify prayers, including special supplications known as *Al-Qunut*, during the five daily prayers for divine intervention. He called for prayers to expose and uproot those allegedly fuelling banditry in the state, whether directly or indirectly.

Lawal further lamented the security situation, describing some developments as “unfortunate and disastrous,” though not suitable for public disclosure. He maintained that he would not implicate anyone falsely for political gain, stressing his resolve to remain truthful in governance.

He also called on Islamic scholars to use their influence, knowledge and eloquence to guide the people towards moral rectitude and peaceful coexistence, noting that Zamfara had suffered setbacks in the past that affected the character of its citizens.

“My doors are always open to listen to your advice on our policies and programmes. Whenever I realise that your position is more right than mine, I am always ready to oblige,” the governor said.

Governor Lawal appreciated the clerics for their engagement and support, stressing the importance of mutual understanding between religious leaders and his administration for the progress of the state.
