2 years after, killers of Ogun Director of Finance yet to be arrested
The murder of Taiwo Oyekanmi, Ogun State’s Director of Finance, remains unsolved two years after his assassination.
The late Oyekanmi was assassinated on November 29, 2023.
However, despite a N50 million bounty offered by the Ogun State Government for information leading to the arrest of his killers, no one has been apprehended or identified in connection with the crime.
Oyekanmi was killed while returning from a bank where he had withdrawn a large sum of money for government use.
The gunmen ambushed the treasury team’s bullion van in Abeokuta, killing Oyekanmi and escaping with N112,335,000 in government revenue.
The police investigation has yielded no clues, leads, or forensic evidence, leaving the case cold.
The family of the victim, particularly his brother, Olanrewaju Oyekanmi, has expressed frustration and disappointment over the lack of progress in the investigation.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, had initially suspected that insiders might be behind the killing, but no arrests have been made.
In his emotional Facebook tribute titled “TAIWO: TWO YEARS AFTER! A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE,” Olanrewaju recounts three recent encounters that painfully reopened old wounds.
This, he said, includes coming face-to-face with the bullet-riddled bullion van at the Ogun State Police Headquarters.
“Lo and behold, the first thing I saw was your old official contraption of a bullion van in which you were gunned down and murdered,” he wrote.
He recalled how a police officer warned him against parking in the area, saying any vehicle left there becomes an exhibit.
“But your presence in absence was already registered forcefully within me,” he stated.
Olanrewaju, in his tribute, paints a picture of a man who rose from humble beginnings to become the first ICAN Chartered Accountant from his hometown.
He described his late brother as a man who defied all odds to acquire an education, excel in civil service, and serve Ogun State diligently until his final moments.
“From secretly sewing a secondary school uniform behind his father’s back, to gaining a miraculous admission into Ogun State Polytechnic, to rising through various ministries before becoming Director of Finance, Taiwo’s life was marked by resilience and uncommon decency,” he said.
Painfully, the family says neither the state government nor his former colleagues officially visited their aging mother to console her, two years after the tragedy.
“I am particularly disappointed that your killers, despite the bounty of N50m, have not been apprehended till today,” Olanrewaju stated.
“I am equally miffed that no official condolence visit has been made to your aged mother.”
Still, he says he has chosen to “let go and let God,” praying that Taiwo’s killers receive “the very best of what they sow.”
“With no CCTV footage, no credible eyewitnesses, no recovered weapons, and no forensic leads, detectives privately admit the case may remain unsolved unless a member of the criminal gang confesses.
