Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has placed security at the centre of his administration’s agenda since assuming office in May 2023, his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris, has said.
According to him, the governor’s decisive actions have helped restore confidence in communities previously affected by banditry and kidnappings.
Idris explained in a Thursday statement that the governor inherited a troubling security situation, especially in Southern Kebbi, where many residents had abandoned their homes and farmlands due to persistent attacks.
He said Governor Idris immediately strengthened cooperation with the military, police, the Department of State Service, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as vigilante groups, improving their operational readiness and welfare.
As part of these efforts, he noted that the administration procured more than 90 Hilux vehicles, thousands of motorcycles, and various security gadgets, while also establishing military bases in strategic areas of Danko-Wasagu and Sakaba local government areas, which share borders with Zamfara and Niger states.
Idris noted that the governor’s commitment was especially evident during the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga.
According to the aide, the governor promptly informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, leading the President to direct the Chief of Army Staff to visit the community and instruct the Minister of State for Defence to relocate to Kebbi to coordinate the rescue operation.
The coordinated effort resulted in the safe rescue of all the girls eight days later.
Speaking during the girls’ reunion with their parents, Governor Idris said:
“I am the happiest person because these girls were safely rescued unharmed. This is a happy day that we have been longing for, especially with what happened to our children at Maga school.”
The governor also expressed appreciation to the President, saying:
“This directive has no doubt yielded a positive result. We are here today celebrating an all-encompassing success. We are very grateful to Mr President.”
The governor urged the rescued students to remain committed to their education, and he called on residents to sustain peace, stressing that development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of rancour.
Beyond security, Ahmed said the governor had recorded progress in agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, youth empowerment and human capital development.
He noted that under the State Agricultural and Livestock Development Programme, the government had distributed 500 trucks of free fertiliser, solar pumps, chemicals, seeds, livestock feed, and other inputs, to boost food production.
He said the strides reflect the governor’s commitment to building a safer and more prosperous state.
