The death toll from the boat accident in Nguru LGA of Yobe State has risen to 29, authorities have disclosed.
The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA), Dr. Goje Muhammad, said two additional corpses were recovered from the river by search-and-rescue teams from YOSEMA, working in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Dr. Muhammad noted that rescue operations were ongoing to recover between eight and 10 passengers still missing, adding that those earlier hospitalised had been discharged.
He explained that preliminary investigation indicated overloading and structural defects of the boat as the major causes of the accident.
He said the state government donated N20m to families of the deceased and survivors, with Governor Mai Mala Buni announcing the donation during a condolence visit to the Nguru Emirate and the Garbi community, represented by his Deputy, Idi Barde Gubana.
