After 6 months suspension, C/ River Assembly removes LG chair
After six months of suspension over allegations of gross misconduct, misappropriation of funds and high-handedness, the Cross River State House of Assembly has formally removed the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Area, Hon. Theresa Ushie. Ushie was first suspended on June 10, 2025, for three months following a petition from eight councillors of the Bekwarra Legislative Council, who initially sought her impeachment. The suspension was later extended by another three months, ending in December 2025. The House subsequently directed its Committee on Judiciary and Public Petitions to investigate the allegations. During Tuesday’s plenary, 19 of 25 lawmakers voted in favour of her removal. Presenting the Committee’s report, the Chairman said the petition dated May 19, 2025, raised serious concerns about the administration of the council. The councillors accused Ushie of corruption, abuse of office, arbitrary stoppage of their salaries and running the council in violation of due process. “After interacting with the petitioners, the suspended chairman and other stakeholders in Abuochiche, the Committee found the allegations weighty and clearly established. Her conduct fell below the expectations of her office, and the evidence before us supports her removal, ” he said. The Committee further noted that testimonies from community members and officials during a fact-finding visit to Bekwarra reinforced the concerns raised in the petition. Adopting the Committee’s recommendations, the Assembly resolved to remove Ushie from office for gross misconduct. It also directed the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) to conduct a bye-election within 30 days to fill the vacant position.
