Kaduna: 100 Vulnerable Widows Get Free Houses
One hundred widows in Kaduna State have become new homeowners after receiving free housing units on Wednesday through a social intervention project spearheaded by the Adashe Women Housing and Empowerment Society in partnership with Family Homes Funds and the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
The beneficiaries, drawn from low-income and vulnerable households, were handed keys and allocation letters to newly completed homes in the Rigachikun area of Igabi Local Government Area.
The project is one of the flagship initiatives under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at expanding affordable housing for disadvantaged Nigerians.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Adashe Women Housing and Empowerment Society, Dr Umma Sani, said the initiative was designed to restore dignity and stability to widows struggling to raise children without support.
“Today, 100 women have been given more than a home; they have been given shelter, peace and a serene environment where they can raise their children,” she said.
Sani explained that the project was made possible through a collaboration that included land provision by her organisation and funding partnerships with Family Homes Funds and the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
“Adashe Women Housing and Empowerment Society is the founder of the idea, but Family Homes partnered with us. The Ministry of Budget and Planning, under the Honourable Minister, Atiku Bagudu, also supported us, and that is how this project came to life,” she noted.
To ensure the widows can sustain their livelihoods in their new homes, the organisation also trained them in business skills and provided starter packs.
“The idea is not just to give houses but to give them the tools to stand on their feet,” Sani said, adding that the project represents only the pilot phase of a larger plan to replicate similar estates across all 36 states.
Government officials present at the ceremony lauded the initiative and urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the property.
The Permanent Secretary, Kaduna State Ministry of Housing Development, Shehu Salisu, said both state and federal authorities were committed to expanding such interventions.
“If the facility is properly maintained, it will encourage the government to do more,” he said. “Let’s live peacefully.”
Similarly, the Managing Director of Family Homes Funds Limited, Abdul Muktar, encouraged the new homeowners to embrace a culture of proper maintenance, noting that housing remains one of life’s most essential needs.
He also revealed that the organisation is executing similar social housing schemes in Ibadan and Calabar. “We are happy to be here, courtesy of President Bola Tinubu and the Finance Minister and his counterpart in the Budget and Planning Ministry,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Sarah Owojere, described the allocation as a turnaround for her family.
“I am very happy and appreciative. God has really granted my heart desires because the house I’m living in is not really good,” she said.
