Surulere Rotary Club holds inaugural marathon, advocates drug abuse prevention
The Rotary Club of Surulere South has hosted its maiden Annual Mini Marathon, drawing hundreds of runners to the streets at dawn in a vibrant display of unity, fitness, and social advocacy.
The 10-kilometre race, themed “Running Against Drug Abuse, Racing for Literacy,” kicked off with impressive enthusiasm and concluded at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, where finishers were received with cheers, music, and a colourful award ceremony.
Speaking at the Saturday, November 29 flag-off, President of the Rotary Club of Surulere South, Faiq Abou, said the initiative was designed to use sports as a tool for social change.
“Every stride taken today is a step away from drug abuse and a leap towards a more informed and peaceful society,” he said.
“Rotary remains committed to promoting literacy and creating safer communities, and this marathon is a bold step in that direction.”
The race attracted professional athletes, recreational runners, youths, fitness groups, and families.
Participants navigated major Surulere landmarks as residents lined parts of the route to cheer them on.
At the stadium, top male and female finishers received medals and cash prizes, while every participant who completed the race was honoured with a commemorative medal and certificate—an acknowledgement of their commitment to the cause.
Chairperson of the Marathon Committee, Elohor Abhulimen, described the turnout as proof of the community’s readiness to join Rotary in tackling drug abuse and promoting education.
“This event is bigger than a race,” she said. “It is a movement. Each participant has helped amplify the message that literacy and healthy living are essential tools for building a peaceful society.”
