Fighting corruption needs collective effort — RMAFC chair

The Chairman, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Dr Mohammed Shehu, says fighting corruption requires collective vigilance, integrity and transparency across all levels of governance.

Shehu said this at a one-day sensitisation programme organised by the RMAFC’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that RMAFC occupied a strategic position in Nigeria’s fiscal framework.

Shehu, who was represented by the Commission’s Secretary, Mr Nwaze Okechukwu, said that the aim of the programme was to strengthen awareness on the effect of corruption among the stakeholders.

According to him, corruption in any form undermines development, distorts fiscal planing, erodes public trust, and ultimately denies citizens social and economic benefits that government revenues are meant to provide

“As a constitutionally empowered institution, we understand the critical role of ethical conduct in safeguarding public resources,” he said.

Shehu expressed delight at the gathering of stakeholders committed to transparency, accountability and integrity in national governance.

Earlier, Mr Idris Sariki, the ACTU Chairman, thanked the ICPC for its guidance and collaboration in promoting transparency within the Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs).

Sariki said that the ACTU’s establishment in the RMAFC reflected the commission’s commitment to integrity, professionalism, accountability and patriotism.

He said that anti-corruption efforts depended on the daily actions and decisions of staff and management.

“Every officer has a responsibility, so we should ensure that we carry all our duty for effective service delivery,” he said.

The Director of SERVICOM, Mr Olaye Osayemen, urged participants to take the programme seriously and comply with civil service financial regulations.
