‘Women empowerment key to ending gender-based violence’
Scholars have identified women’s empowerment as a crucial tool for tackling gender-based violence in Nigeria.
This formed part of discussions at the First Advocacy Lecture organised by the Centre for Gender Studies, Gombe State University (GSU).
Delivering a lecture titled “Integrating Gender Studies for Inclusive Economic Growth and Sustainable Community Transformation,” Dr Abdullahi Abubakar Lamido of Bayero University, Kano, stressed that empowering women promotes gender equity and reduces violence.
He said many misconceptions about Islamic teachings contribute to the marginalisation of women, despite Islam’s emphasis on dignity, fairness and protection of women’s rights.
Lamido urged Nigerians to embrace mutual respect and reject cultural practices that undermine women. He said the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) championed women’s rights and served as an example of justice and compassion.
Director of the Centre, Dr Aishatu Abubakar Kumo, noted that Nigerian women continue to face violence, discrimination and socio-economic challenges. She said empowering women—who make up nearly half of Nigeria’s population—is essential for unlocking national development.
She added that when women are empowered, families, communities, and the nation benefit through improved economic productivity, social stability, and stronger political participation.
She expressed hope that the advocacy lecture would inspire more Nigerians to support policies and cultural reforms that promote gender justice.
