
17 drug traffickers jailed 84 years
The Federal High Court sitting in Benin City has sentenced 17 drug traffickers to 84 years in the Correctional Centre after finding them guilty of various drug offences.
The convicts were however given various options of fine.
Daily Trust reports that Justice Prof. Chuka Obiozo, convicted four of the suspects, while 13 were convicted by Hon. Justice B. O. Quadiri.
Four of the convicts received 15 years imprisonment in Correctional Centres while others got between one and five years, bringing the total jail term to 84 years.
The convicts were charged by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), for various drug offences including unlawful possession of illicit drugs, dealing, and cultivation of controlled substances, among other offences.
The court held that the prosecution were able to prove their case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the convicts accordingly.
Responding, state’s NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, restated the command’s commitment to ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law, thereby safeguarding public health and security.”
According to him, the 17 convictions were recorded in the month of November.
