African tech giants push for wider, cheaper internet

Africa Hyperscalers will convene a high-level strategy workshop in Lagos on 11 December to accelerate coordinated network buildout and shared infrastructure models aimed at improving broadband affordability across Nigeria.

The closed-door session follows discussions at the group’s annual Hyperscalers Convergence Africa 2025 conference and is expected to bring together the country’s major operators, regulators and digital infrastructure firms to shape a unified blueprint for expanding connectivity.

Nigeria’s fixed broadband penetration remains below six per cent despite heavy investment in subsea cables, backbone fibre, and metro networks. Organisers said in a statement on Sunday that the workshop will focus on how shared systems, co-built frameworks, and deeper collaboration among telecom operators can strengthen deployment economics and extend services to underserved regions.

Speakers include Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Dr Kashifu Abdullahi; Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Innovation and Broadband, Engr Ganiyu Oseni; Associate Director at IHS Towers, Temitayo Oyeleke; Managing Director of Bayobab Nigeria, Josephine Sarouk; Chief Executive Officer of Fibre One Broadband, Lanre Ore; and Chief Executive Officer of the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria, Muhammed Rudman.

Senior representatives from ntel, Open Access Data Centres, ipNX, Tizeti, Africa Data Centres, Dimension Data, Broadbased Communications, TelCables Nigeria, IXPN, Avanti, WTES, and Nokia are also expected to attend.

In a statement, the organisers said the completion of the 2Africa subsea cable marked more than a landing; it signalled a new era of collaboration and continental connectivity.

“The real test before us is not capacity at the shore, but capacity inland,” they added. “The same ambition that brought global operators together at the coastline must now be replicated across backbones, metros, and last-mile networks if Africa is to unlock the benefits of this investment fully.”

The workshop will seek alignment on infrastructure models linking subsea gateways to terrestrial backbones, metro rings, internet exchange points, and last-mile systems. It is invitation-only to encourage frank, outcome-driven discussions among decision-makers shaping the country’s digital future.
