10 killed in Plateau auto crash
At least 10 passengers were killed, while several others sustained injuries in a ghastly motor accident along the Jos–Bauchi Road in Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.
Our correspondent reports that the incident, which occurred shortly after a military checkpoint at about 12:12 a.m. on Tuesday, involved two trailers and two mini buses.
The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Plateau State Command, Peter Y. Longsan, who is also a superintendent and route commander, confirmed the crash.
He said the rescue operation was jointly carried out by FRSC personnel, the police, officials of the Ministry of Works and villagers in the area.
“The crash occurred at about 12:12 a.m. and involved four vehicles — two trailers and two mini buses (Ford Galaxy),” Longsan said.
“About 19 people were involved, comprising 17 males and two females. Sadly, 10 adult males died on the spot, while those injured were taken to the General Hospital, Miango; Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH); and the Plateau State Specialist Hospital for medical attention.”
He added that eight corpses were deposited at the morgues of the Plateau State Specialist Hospital and Bingham University Teaching Hospital, while two bodies were claimed by officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for burial.
Longsan said preliminary investigations indicated that excessive speed and reckless driving were the major contributory factors, adding that further investigations were ongoing.
The sector command, however, advised commuters to avoid night journeys, shun excessive speed and dangerous driving, and always prioritise their personal safety.
Daily Trust reports that the incident occurred barely 12 days after nine students of the University of Jos were killed in another fatal accident along the Zaria Road.
