Ogbekenu Quarters emerged champions of the 2025 Onicha Olona Unity Cup after edging Ogbe-Obi Quarters 3–2 in a pulsating final that brought the grassroots football tournament to a colourful conclusion in Onicha Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The keenly contested final served as the highlight of the tournament and provided a fitting climax to the competition, which was staged at an ultra-modern, FIFA-standard mini stadium with tartan tracks built by the President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, RT. Hon. Victor Ochei. The new facility was successfully put to test during the tournament and earned widespread praise for its quality and functionality.
The annual Unity Cup attracted football enthusiasts, community leaders and young talents from across the area, with the final drawing a large and vibrant crowd. Ogbekenu Quarters’ narrow victory was celebrated by supporters, as the team was rewarded with a star prize of N3 million.
Speaking at the event, Victor Ochei explained that the stadium project was driven by a passion to provide quality sporting infrastructure at the grassroots level while complementing government efforts in sports development. He noted that the facility features standard fans’ barricades, an efficient drainage system, covered spectators’ stands and other modern amenities designed to meet international best practices.
Ochei disclosed that although the stadium is already in use, it will be officially inaugurated in 2026 and is expected to serve as a training centre for aspiring footballers, local league sides and national teams.
“This stadium is about giving young talents the right environment to grow. When you provide quality infrastructure at the grassroots, you create opportunities and hope for the future,” he said.
The successful staging of the final and the tournament as a whole reinforced the impact of the new facility and highlighted Ochei’s commitment to grassroots sports development and youth empowerment.
