
Marcus dominates as TYB Lady Captain’s Cup debuts in Abuja
The maiden edition of the TYB Lady Captain’s Cup Championship teed off in spectacular fashion at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Abuja, producing standout performances and setting a new benchmark for women’s golf at the club.
After three days of intense competition, S.J. Marcus emerged as the star of the tournament, clinching the overall ladies’ title with a brilliant 141 net, playing off handicap 14.
Marcus outclassed a competitive field, finishing ahead of Patience Abechi, who returned 152 net to claim the runner-up position, while Rose Nyam followed with 155 net to finish as second runner-up.
Elizabeth Samuel secured the Best Gross title with an impressive 178 gross over two days. Reflecting on her victory, Marcus described the win as “surreal,” adding that perseverance, focus, and mental discipline carried her through difficult moments on the course.
She praised the camaraderie among participants, noting that the supportive atmosphere contributed to her success. Marcus also extended warm appreciation to Lady Captain Maureen Apute, whose leadership, she said, inspired many competitors to prepare rigorously for the event.
The men’s Division 1 category saw a strong finish from Isaiah Okonofua, who topped the field with 68 net, while Babajide Ashebu followed with 72 net. The veterans’ divisions delivered equally compelling performances: Mary Rose Obioha claimed best net among ladies, with Florence Anyanwu as runner-up, while Paul Erokoro and Martins Adabo dominated the men’s veteran net and gross categories respectively. Super Veteran champion Dibu Ojerinde also delivered steady rounds to win his category.
Guest players added colour to the tournament, with Jennifer Shaapera and Josephine Benjamin winning net and gross in the ladies’ guest category, while Kabiru Adamu and Sunday Felix claimed net and gross titles among the men. Auxiliary prizes highlighted standout moments, including longest drives won by Shaapera (281 m), Femi Ayodele (332 m), and Abechi (265 m), as well as nearest-to-pin victories by Nyam, Ali Idoko, Doris Gema, and Mark Obetta.
Lady Captain Apute, marking the end of her tenure, expressed gratitude for the massive turnout from across Nigeria. She used the platform to advocate cervical cancer awareness, urging women to prioritise early screening.
Club Captain Brig-Gen. Nicholas Ashinze and Vice Captain Dr. Ali Peters praised the tournament’s organisation and impact, noting that the championship had elevated standards and strengthened unity within the club. LOC Chairman Mark Obetta hailed the event as one of the club’s finest, attributing its success to sponsors, volunteers, resident pros, and dedicated caddies.
