Sokoto govt approves N1.8bn for HIV/AIDS kits, others
The Sokoto State Executive Council has approved N1.8 billion for the procurement of HIV/AIDS testing kits, equipment and drugs.
Part of the money would be used for the renovation of six additional hospitals across the state.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Wurno, announced this on Thursday while briefing journalists after the council meeting presided over by Governor Ahmed Aliyu.
He said the investment reflects the government’s determination to strengthen the healthcare system across all 23 local government areas.
According to him, N100.6m of the total sum was earmarked for the procurement of HIV/AIDS testing kits, treatment materials and essential drugs, as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate the disease.
“The procurement is a demonstration of the state government’s commitment to complementing the efforts of development partners in eradicating HIV,” Wurno said.
He added that the approved renovation, repair and remodeling of six additional hospitals brings the total number of health facilities undergoing upgrade in the state to 15.
The hospitals and their approved allocation include: Yabo General Hospital (N290m), Shagari General Hospital (N382m), Sabon-Birni General Hospital (N237m), Tangaza General Hospital (N272m), Goronyo General Hospital (N291m), and the Women and Children Hospital (WCWC), Sokoto (N187m). Wurno noted that the projects have a six-month execution period, with a 30 per cent mobilisation fee already approved for contractors.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Sambo Danchadi, said the council approved N72.6m for the procurement of laptops, desktop computers and digital tablets for the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme.
He said another N113.1m was approved for the purchase of textbooks and notebooks for schools, while N337.3m was set aside for the construction of drainage systems in Gawon Nama and along the Wamakko–Orthopedic Hospital road.
In a related development, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Alhaji Abubakar Zayyanu, announced the council’s approval of the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) for the 2026–2028 Appropriation Bill.
Zayyanu explained that the framework outlines macroeconomic projections, revenue expectations and expenditure plans to guide government spending over the three-year period.
“The MTEF projection and fiscal strategy set out all revenue and expenditure projections for each year,” he said, adding that the framework aims to ensure more effective budget implementation anchored on clear objectives and developmental priorities.
