Chelle rues penalties as Super Eagles fall in Rabat
Eric Chelle cut a measured but painful figure after Nigeria’s AFCON semi-final dream ended in heartbreak, the Super Eagles losing 4–2 on penalties to hosts Morocco in Rabat.
The Nigeria Head Coach praised his players’ mentality and effort, while acknowledging the fine margins that decided a gripping contest.
“The match was never easy, but the players showed a strong mental response and fought for every ball,” Chelle said.
“Losing on penalties is very painful. We worked hard throughout the entire tournament, but that’s football. We must continue working.”
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching a second consecutive AFCON final were dashed after 120 minutes of absorbing, high-quality football produced no goals.
Both sides showed intent from the outset in an open first half. Brahim Diaz went close for Morocco with a curling effort that drifted narrowly wide, while Stanley Nwabali reacted sharply to deny Ismail Saibari.
At the other end, Ademola Lookman tested Yassine Bounou with a low drive from distance.
Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s attacking talisman, was closely marshalled throughout, with Morocco’s defence refusing to afford him space.
After the interval, the hosts began to assert greater control, pushing higher up the pitch and increasing the tempo.
Calvin Bassey was immense at the heart of Nigeria’s defence, repeatedly using his strength and composure to repel sustained pressure.
Morocco’s best opening came through Abde Ezzalzouli, whose curling strike from inside the box was superbly turned away by Nwabali.
Chelle revealed Nigeria adopted a high-pressing approach, but admitted the team lacked their usual sharpness.
“From a technical point of view, we were not at the same level as in other matches. We lacked movement and power,” he said.
As fatigue set in during extra time, caution prevailed. With no breakthrough after 120 minutes, penalties decided the contest, and Bounou emerged the hero as Morocco booked a long-awaited final place.
Nigeria will now regroup for the third-place play-off against Egypt in Casablanca on Saturday.
Nigerians can now invest ₦2.5 million on premium domains and profit about ₦17-₦25 million. All earnings paid in US Dollars. Rather than wonder, click here to find out how it works.
