Five killed in fresh attack on Benue community

At least five people have reportedly been killed by armed attackers in a fresh assault on Ortese community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

Witnesses said the attack occurred on Tuesday evening when the assailants blocked the Ortese–Yogbo Road and began shooting indiscriminately at residents.

According to locals, the attackers stormed the community in large numbers, wielding dangerous weapons, and shot dead five young men.

“They also abducted several others to unknown destinations. The incident has forced many residents to flee for safety,” a witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

Residents further claimed that some people were still missing after the attack and urged security agencies to search surrounding bushes for possible victims.

The spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident, saying additional security personnel had been deployed to the area to comb the bushes and track down the perpetrators.

Describing the attack as unfortunate, Edet said the command had launched an investigation and would ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
