Man to face trial for selling unsafe fibroid drugs

The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday vowed to prosecute Williams Adetunji, who was arrested for allegedly selling harmful and unapproved medication that he claimed could expel fibroids.

Adetunji was apprehended following a petition by an Ogun State-based law firm, Roberts Rasaaq Agboke and Associates, on behalf of their client, a young woman whose name was withheld, who reportedly suffered severe harm after using the alleged fake fibroid treatment.

Addressing journalists in Abeokuta on Tuesday, a lawyer from the firm, Hassan Yakubu, said their client experienced life-altering injuries due to Adetunji’s alleged production, marketing, distribution, and administration of substances purported to treat fibroids and other reproductive conditions—without medical qualification, regulatory approval, or a lawful licence to practise medicine.

Yakubu identified the products in question as Enervate Capsules and Tumorex, believed to contain caustic soda and other harmful chemicals.

He explained that, after using the medication, their client suffered chemical burns, scarring, obstruction of the vaginal canal, prolonged abnormal bleeding, severe pain, and long-term reproductive complications, requiring urgent reconstructive surgery estimated at N1.3m.

He added that this was not an isolated incident. According to him, several other women, who had used the same substances, reportedly experienced similar injuries, including complications affecting the bladder and rectum.

He claimed that some victims who spoke out were allegedly intimidated or removed from online forums created by the self-styled fibroid specialist, even as he continued distributing these dangerous products.

Yakubu stated, “Relying on the fake misrepresentations by Adetunji, our client purchased the medications on or about 6th September 2023.

“Upon commencing use and following the explicit instructions, she suffered severe internal injury, including chemical burns, scarring, obstruction of the vaginal canal, prolonged abnormal bleeding, severe pain, reproductive complications, and long-term physiological consequences.

“Subsequent medical examination confirmed that the inserted product contained caustic, corrosive chemical agents, including caustic soda, resulting in damage to vaginal tissue.

“The damage is significant and requires reconstructive surgical intervention, currently estimated at N1,300,000, separate from the unresolved fibroid treatment which Adetunji falsely claimed to cure.”

He explained that the law firm petitioned the state police command in November to arrest, investigate, and prosecute Adetunji under the relevant criminal and regulatory provisions.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest, saying that Adetunji would be charged in court once investigations were concluded.

“The man is in our custody. I have confirmed this with the O/C of the Anti-Cultism Unit. The investigation is ongoing, and other complainants are coming forward to identify him as the person who sold the drug to them. As soon as the investigation is completed, he will be charged in court,” Babaseyi said.
