FG begins N47bn Jakara–Wuju–Wuju road, sewage project in Kano
The Federal Government has commenced construction of the N47 billion Jakara–Wuju–Wuju road and sewage project in the Kano metropolis, a major urban infrastructure intervention aimed at controlling erosion and stimulating economic activity in the state.
The project cuts across Gwale, Kano Municipal, Dala and Fagge local government areas, linking densely populated parts of the metropolis that are prone to flooding and environmental degradation.
Yusuf Abdullahi Ata, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, said on Tuesday that the Federal Government had resolved to take over the project following a formal request by the Kano State Government.
The state government had already completed about 850 metres of the road before the federal takeover, while the Federal Government will fund the remaining 6.7 kilometres. The Kano State Government will be responsible for paying compensation to owners of properties affected by the project.
The road and sewage scheme is designed to address long-standing erosion and drainage challenges in the area, while also improving mobility, sanitation and commercial activities when completed.
The Jakara–Wuju–Wuju project was originally initiated in 2013 under the administration of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as part of efforts to tackle recurrent flooding and environmental hazards around the Jakara River corridor. However, funding constraints slowed progress over the years, limiting construction to less than one kilometre.

Ata commended Kwankwaso for initiating the project and expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving federal funding to ensure its completion.
“The initiative is a major intervention that underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to Kano State and the well-being of its people,” the minister said.
When completed, the project is expected to significantly improve urban infrastructure in Kano, reduce erosion-related damage, and enhance economic activities across the benefiting local government areas.
