
Youth Games: Nigeria dominates weightlifting, sweeps medals
Nigeria delivered a commanding performance on the opening day of the weightlifting events at the 4th African Youth Games in Angola, sweeping a remarkable eight gold medals and one silver to assert early dominance in the competition.
Favour Cornelius spearheaded Nigeria’s golden surge in the 44kg category with a flawless outing. She claimed three gold medals after lifting 50kg in the snatch and 64kg in the clean and jerk, before sealing overall victory with a combined total of 114kg.
Nigeria’s dominance continued in the 48kg division, where Esther Chidalu Ezenwa delivered another emphatic triple-gold performance. She recorded 63kg in the snatch and 77kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with an aggregate lift of 140kg to comfortably top her category.
In the 53kg event, Chinaza Cecelia Ezenwa added further sparkle to Nigeria’s medal tally. She began with a silver medal in the snatch after lifting 65kg, but responded strongly to secure gold in the clean and jerk with 83kg. Her combined total of 148kg earned her a second gold medal in the overall standings.
On Day 1 of the weightlifting event, Nigeria’s medal haul stood at eight gold medals and one silver, marking a dominant opening performance at the 4th African Youth Games and setting a strong run for the rest of the competition.
