Lagos honours PUNCH with outstanding award

The PUNCH, Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper, has been honoured with the Media Excellence in Disability Reporting award by the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs.

The award was presented on Wednesday during the commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Persons With Disability, themed “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”

The General Manager of LASODA, Mrs Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, presented the award to the newspaper’s representative amid applause from participants at the event held at Oregun, Lagos.

She said The PUNCH stood out among other media houses in the state for its reporting on disability issues.

The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, commended the contributions of persons with disabilities to the state, despite facing stigmatisation and discrimination.

Salu-Hundeyin also highlighted initiatives by LASODA that have provided inclusive education for several children with disabilities.

“We celebrate exceptional creativity, innovation, and talent within the disability community, and provide financial reward and employment for participants,” Salu-Hundeyin said.

In her remarks, Oyetunde-Lawal highlighted LASODA’s achievements and applauded disability groups, non-governmental organisations, corporate bodies, and entrepreneurs who have played key roles.

She noted that stronger enforcement of disability laws in Lagos would remain a priority over the next two years.

The GM also led the distribution of supportive materials, including wheelchairs and walking aids, to persons with disabilities present at the event.

“We attempt to address the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and propose sustainable, practicable solutions,” she stated.

The Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said building an inclusive society requires persistence, patience, and unified efforts.

He urged persons with disabilities not to give up, adding, “Every policy implemented, every programme initiated, every barrier broken, and every voice heard brings us one step closer to the Lagos we collectively envisioned.”

The event was attended by several dignitaries from the Lagos State Government, including permanent secretaries, directors of agencies, as well as founders of private organisations, disability groups, charity organisations, and prominent personalities.

One of the highlights of the event was a panel session and a question-and-answer segment that focused on the challenges confronting persons with disabilities in Lagos.

Giving the vote of thanks, LASODA’s Director of Administration and Human Resources, Mrs. Omolade Sonubi, appreciated all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the event.
