The Nigerian Army has taken a step toward modernising its training architecture with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Wargaming Centre at the Department of Land Warfare, Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, on Saturday.
In a post by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, on the Nigerian Army’s X account, the Commandant of AFCSC, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Alhaji, who welcomed the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the college remains committed to developing officers who are intellectually equipped for command, instructional and staff roles across increasingly complex security environments.
He explained that the new Wargaming Centre, conceived and championed by the COAS, will significantly strengthen personnel’s capacity to develop modern operational concepts, enhance strategic reasoning, and improve combat decision-making in today’s dynamic battlespace.
The commandant commended the Army leadership for delivering a world-class facility and assured that the College will continue to support the Department of Land Warfare in providing top-tier professional military education.
In his address, the Chief of Army Staff reaffirmed AFCSC’s role as a national and regional centre of excellence for grooming officers capable of responding to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
Shaibu said the “Wargaming Centre will serve as a critical tool for refining commanders’ ability to plan, rehearse, and execute operations with greater precision.
“Investment in advanced training technologies is essential for staying ahead of adversaries and strengthening the Army’s capacity for effective deployment across various theatres.”
He urged students and instructors to maximise the new facility, especially as the Army continues to operate in fluid, unpredictable, and technology-driven environments.
Reiterating his vision to upgrade and modernise all military training infrastructure to global standards, the COAS highlighted AFCSC’s reputation as a magnet for officers from around the world—making cutting-edge facilities such as the Wargaming Centre both timely and indispensable.
He thanked President Bola Tinubu, whose sustained support for national security, he said, continues to drive the Army’s transformation efforts.
Shaibu also commended the Commandant and the College community for their dedication to advancing military professionalism.
