FG challenges states, LGs to harness technology
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has tasked state governments and local government council chairmen to embrace new innovations and technology to develop digitally.
Dr. Tijani gave the advice in Jos, Plateau State, on Monday, at the opening ceremony of the 13th regular meeting of the National Council on Communications Innovation and Digital Economy, saying, “The future is digital—but it must be inclusive and sustainable.”
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Engr. Nadungu Gagare, Tijani explained that, “Sustainable growth in the digital era requires trust in digital platforms, support for home-grown innovation and an enabling regulatory environment.”
The minister, however, noted that, “The challenges in accelerating inclusive digital transformation are real, but they are not insurmountable with bold policies, sustained investment and strong partnerships.”
Declaring the five-day meeting open, the Plateau State Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, appealed to participants to discuss deeply and be open for other participants to learn from their innovation skills.
Dr. Shurkuk told the gathering that the Plateau State Government had done very well in the technological innovation subsector sector.
He said, “We are expanding broadband and digital connectivity, strengthening ICT infrastructure across urban and rural communities, supporting innovation hubs and youth-led tech initiatives, enhancing digital skills to empower civil servants, students, entrepreneurs and the wider public. These efforts reflect our belief that innovation and technology are powerful tools for inclusive growth, job creation and economic prosperity.
“This year’s theme reminds us that innovation is not only about technology, but also about equitable access, empowered communities and creating opportunities for every citizen to contribute to national development. Nigeria’s progress depends on how effectively we harness digital tools for governance, commerce, education, healthcare and security.”
The 13th regular meeting of communication innovation and digital economy had participants from across the 36 states of the federation, including staff of the Federal Ministry of Communications Innovation and Digital economy and security operatives.
