Why We Reduced Abuja–Kaduna Train Trips – NRC
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has explained that the recent reduction in the frequency of Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) trips is a temporary situation caused by unforeseen operational setbacks, not neglect or lack of commitment to passengers.
While responding to an article by one Muhammad Iskeel Abdullahi, alleging neglect in the operation of the train service, the NRC acknowledged the concerns raised and expressed appreciation for the patriotic interest in the nation’s railway system.
In the statement signed by Callistus Unyimadu, Chief Public Relations Officer, the Corporation noted that every piece of feedback is taken seriously, especially on the Abuja–Kaduna corridor, which remains a flagship route in Nigeria’s modern rail renaissance.
According to the NRC, the current reduction in daily trips is due to two major incidents that directly affected its capacity.
These include the impact of the March 2022 terrorist attack on the route which resulted in tragic loss of lives and widespread trauma.
Following the incident, the NRC introduced stringent safety measures, redesigned operational procedures, restricted late-evening trips, and deepened collaboration with security agencies to prevent any recurrence. These adjustments continue to influence service patterns.
The NRC stated that the recent derailment led to substantial damage to its modern Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) coaches, significantly reducing the number of serviceable rolling stock.
This directly necessitated a temporary cut in the number of daily trips.
Repair and refurbishment works, the Corporation confirmed, are ongoing with urgency. Arrangements are also in progress to deploy additional coaches to restore normal frequency as soon as possible.
To fast-track full restoration of the route, the NRC outlined several steps currently underway.
It said the damaged coaches are undergoing repairs, certification, and safety assessments and alternative rolling stock is being considered for temporary reinforcement.
It added that security across the corridor continues to be strengthened, disclosing that restoring multiple daily trips remains a top operational priority.
The Corporation emphasized that these challenges represent a phase of recovery and rebuilding, not a decline in service commitment. It credited the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, and the Minister of Transport for providing strong support toward enhancing national rail infrastructure.
The NRC appealed for patience and understanding from the public, assuring that passengers will soon see steady improvements leading to the complete normalization of services. It reaffirmed its commitment to safety, reliability, and transparent communication.
