Man to die by hanging for killing neighbour in Kano
A Kano State High Court has sentenced 22-year-old Najibullah Alkasim to death by hanging for killing his neighbour, Isyaku Ya’u, during a dispute at a celebration party in Dakata Quarters on January 19, 2024.
Justice Farida Dabappa held that the prosecution proved the charge of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt, noting that Alkasim stabbed the deceased in the chest with a screwdriver during the argument.
Prosecution Counsel Lamido Abba-Sorondinki told the court that the incident occurred at a party organised to celebrate an election victory.
The court received testimonies from four witnesses, a medical report, photograph, the weapon used, and Alkasim’s alleged confessional statement.
Alkasim denied the allegation, and his lawyer, Tasiu Daneji, presented three defence witnesses, but the court found their evidence insufficient.
The verdict closed a painful chapter for Ya’u’s family, while leaving Alkasim’s relatives to grapple with the consequences of a fatal conflict that erupted on what should have been a night of celebration.
