A former lawmaker representing Cross River South and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Gershom Bassey, has commended Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, for improving security in the state.
He said the situation has significantly improved since he assumed office.
Bassey made the remarks during an interactive session with journalists on Wednesday in Calabar, noting that the governor had demonstrated the right intentions and ambition to do what was right for the state.
He also praised the administration’s efforts in infrastructure development, particularly in water supply and road construction, while urging the governor to intensify efforts.
“I know that the government is trying in a number of areas, water and so on. But more importantly, I think one of the main areas where I must give credit to Governor Bassey Otu is security,” he said.
He added, “I would urge him to do more, as much as possible. But at least he has the good intention to do more, and he is ambitious to do the right thing, and so I have to give him kudos for that.
“I will hold my judgment until the end of his first term, but so far, he has started on the right track in many areas.”
Bassey noted that security in Calabar and across the state had improved markedly since Otu took office, recounting personal experiences to illustrate the change.
“There was a time when, if I or members of my family were coming here, I had to arrange serious security. Today, I move around, I drive myself, and I have no issues. I must give him kudos for the security status of the state,” he said.
While acknowledging positive developments under the APC-led government, the former senator said it was premature to deliver a final verdict on the administration’s overall performance.
“There have been positive things, and there have also been negative things. You cannot call a game at halftime. You have to wait until the end of the match,” he stated.
He also urged the governor to pay attention to criticism, noting that feedback from critics could be useful.
“When people criticise you, some criticism may be unfair, but often there is a grain of truth in it,” he said.
