Oba of Benin dissociates self from attack on ex-gov Obaseki’s cousin
The Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has dissociated the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, from the recent attack on Dr. Pedro Obaseki, a cousin of former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, following allegations that he made disrespectful comments about the monarch. In a statement signed by the Palace Secretary, Frank Irabor, the BTC said the Oba neither authorised nor condoned the assault on Pedro Obaseki.
“We use this medium to inform the general public that the unfortunate incident in which Pedro Obaseki was manhandled was not authorised by the Oba of Benin,” the statement read in part. “It could not have been authorised, as it is not in the character of our revered monarch. The Oba of Benin is a peace-loving father to all,” it added. The council cautioned youths against taking the law into their hands regardless of the level of provocation, urging them to always respect the rule of law and allow relevant security agencies to handle any grievances.
The BTC also warned against the spread of unverified information on social media, advising users to cross-check facts before posting to avoid misinformation and unnecessary tension.
Recall that Pedro Obaseki was assaulted and stripped naked by some youths while playing football at the Uwa Primary School field on Igbesamwan Street, Benin City.
Witnesses said the youths accused him of making insulting remarks about the Oba of Benin during a visit to the United Kingdom.
