Farmer/herder clashes: Yobe gov commissions ruga settlement
Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has commissioned a Fulani Ruga Settlement in Nguru Local Government Area of the state.
The Ruga settlement was established by a renowned philanthropist, Alhaji Balarabe Abdullahi, popularly known as Balarabe DJ, to reduce violent clashes between farmers and herders.
The settlement is fully equipped with essential social and economic infrastructure, including two-bedroom residential houses and a school.
Other facilities provided include a shopping centre, a primary healthcare centre, potable water supply, electricity, and a mosque, all designed to support decent and sustainable living for the herders.
While commissioning the project, Governor Buni said the initiative would help end open grazing, which often leads to the destruction of farmlands.
He noted that the modern rural grazing settlement would assist the state government in integrating pastoralists into the wider society, while also improving access to education and healthcare.
The governor called on public-spirited individuals to emulate the gesture of the philanthropist in supporting peace and development.
“We have seen the multiplier effects of what he has put in place and the benefits it brings to the community.
“The school, the dispensary, the clinic, and the houses provided for the Ruga settlement are commendable.
“He has done well, and we appreciate him on behalf of the people of Nguru Local Government, Yobe State, and Nigeria,” the governor said.
Earlier, Alhaji Abdullahi said the initiative was designed to reduce clashes between herders and farmers by providing designated grazing areas.
