Kano steps up efforts to counter violent extremism
The Kano State chapter of the Partnership Against Violent Extremism (PAVE) Network has said the state is recording progress in preventing and countering violent extremism despite lingering challenges such as insecurity, youth unemployment and socio-economic exclusion in the North West.
The Chairperson of PAVE Network, Nafisa Muhammad Ado, stated this on Wednesday while briefing journalists.
She noted that the region continued to face threats from extremist groups, bandits, kidnappers and other criminals.
She said the Kano State Government under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had intensified coordinated security operations in vulnerable communities to address banditry, isolated kidnappings, infiltration by armed groups, phone snatching and thuggery.
According to her, PAVE, working with government and other stakeholders, has made strides in institutional and community capacity building through multi-stakeholder workshops, dialogue platforms and the training of technical working groups on the development of state and local action plans.
Nafisa said community resilience campaigns focusing on peace education, tolerance and conflict awareness had also been rolled out, helping to strengthen early warning mechanisms and trust between citizens and authorities.
She warned that the continued presence of armed groups, weak intelligence linkages in some local government areas and poor integration of PCVE priorities into budgets remained major concerns.
Calling for collective actions, she urged residents, traditional and religious leaders, youth and women groups, MDAs and security agencies to work together to counter violent extremism, stressing that peace and resilience were the responsibility of all.
