Yobe: Youths advocate informed participation ahead 2027 polls
Youth groups across Yobe State have intensified efforts to shape the 2027 governorship race following a one-day Youth Organisations’ Summit aimed at identifying credible leadership qualities. The summit, organised by the Coalition of Yobe-East Progressive Youths, was held under the theme: “Youth Voices for a Progressive Yobe: Identifying the Best Gubernatorial Material for 2027”, and drew participants from youth groups, student bodies, civil society and community organisations. The coalition’s President, Dr. Yerima Goni, said the summit was designed to reposition youths as informed stakeholders rather than passive observers in politics, stressing the need for objective assessment of leadership capacity, integrity and development records.
A keynote address by Malam Usman Bin Affan underscored the importance of deepening youth participation beyond voting, advocating leadership development and policy engagement.
A major highlight was a leadership scorecard exercise conducted by five independent groups, assessing potential aspirants across the three senatorial zones using criteria such as experience, competence, integrity, vision and grassroots engagement.
Five aspirants emerged, including Kashim Musa Tumsa, Musa Mustapha, Abubakar D. Aliyu, Sen. Ibrahim Bomai and Sen. Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan. Results showed Sen. Lawan topping the scorecard with over 90 per cent average rating, having been assessed by all five groups.
